Kerry opens a new $5m manufacturing facility in Uganda, its fourth in East Africa

Mar 11, 2024

Ingredients and nutrition company Kerry has inaugurated a new $5m manufacturing facility in Uganda, the latest development in a major expansion plan in East Africa.

The new facility means that Kerry has a manufacturing footprint in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda as well as South Africa and Cameroon. Kerry also has sales offices in Lagos and Nairobi.

The company has been investing heavily in sub Saharan Africa. In November 2023 it opened its first manufacturing facility in Tanzania. The move was part of a broader pattern in the ingredients sector to move small R&D and manufacturing facilities closer to high growth markets in Africa.

Kerry’s main facility in Africa is in Durban, South Africa. In May 2022 it opened a new $40m R&D and manufacturing site to produce nutrition solutions for African markets. In December 2021, Kerry acquired Rwanda-headquartered. Afribon was founded in 2012 and specialised in the development, production and marketing of food flavours. Afribon had five production sites, in Rwanda, Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
