Choithrams has opened a new Mahima supermarket in Bonamoussadi, Douala: its 6th store in Cameroon and a vital step to taking on Casino and Carrefour.

Choithrams has officially opened a new Mahima supermarket in Bonamoussadi, Douala today. It is the supermarket chain’s 2nd store in Bonamoussadi and its 6th store in Cameroon. Mahima now has three stores in Douala and three stores in Yaoundé.

The new outlet is a purpose built large supermarket we estimate of around 2,000m² of retail space. It is situated opposite the Société Générale building in Bonamoussadi, an upscale residential area in the north of Douala. The new supermarket features mostly imported products. It has a meat, fish and cheese counter, a vegetable section and an extensive wine section. The store will be open seven days a week, from 0830 in the morning to 2030.

The new Bonamoussadi supermarket is vital for Mahima’s continued success in Cameroon. Traditionally seen as the leading supermarket operator in Cameroon, Mahima faces intense competition from Casino, Super U (both operated by Mercure), Spar and Carrefour. Incoming international chains have typically opened large supermarkets or hypermarkets in destination malls. By contrast, Mahima’s store network is mostly in older, standalone buildings.
