Choppies Zimbabwe has launched a new online platform that allows diaspora Zimbabweans to order products that will be collected from their local branch. The initiative uses UK click and collect startup tech firm Kamelee’s platform to generate orders, which can be picked up from any of its 32 branches in Zimbabwe. Kamelee also partners with Fiesta Wine & Liquor Store, a Zimbabwe-based alcohol retailer.

Upon presentation of their ID, the named recipient of the order is then able to collect it. In 2016, inward remittances were worth $780m to the Zimbabwean economy, down from $935m in 2015. Although the agreement with the online platform was signed some months ago, the online ordering has only just been launched.

Our experience testing it suggests it is very much in trial stage: we could only select maize to purchase for delivery to the Choppies Solomons store in Bulawayo.
