Auchan has opened its ninth supermarket in Senegal in the Scat Urbam area of Dakar. The new store, which is a smaller neighbourhood store under the myAuchan banner, will carry 2,500 product references and include both fresh and packaged products. It will compete directly with Citydia’s store, also in Scat Urbam. The store is open seven days a week from 8.00 to midnight. It is Auchan’s third myAuchan store in Dakar.
For the past 12 months, Citydia and Auchan have been intensively opening new stores as they seek to dominate the modern grocery retail space in Dakar. Since November 2016, Auchan has launched five new stores and now has the same number of stores in Dakar as Citydia (all stores for both chains are in Dakar). An overlay of each chain’s network in Dakar shows that Auchan is targeting the same areas Citydia operates in.
In December 2016 Auchan rebranded its stores from Atac to Auchan. Each of the new stores has been given a refreshed identity on the store front itself to help consumers identify the store network more easily: Mairie, PointE, Virage, Liberte V, Ouakam, Gibraltar, Castor and Yoff. This is also something Citydia has tended to do for its stores.
