Tuskys Supermarkets and Jumia have partnered to create an online retail platform that will allow Kenyan consumers to buy maize flour for as low as Sh22.5/kg. The reduced price is being offered in the context of Jumia’s 5th anniversary celebrations.
The offer also comes in the context of escalating prices of maize flour in Kenya, which have reached more than Sh75 per kg. After the price hike, the Kenyan government allowed and subsidized the import of maize flour to face the increasingly problematic lack of the product in the country. However, numerous reports in the following weeks continually showed that stocks were still dramatically low. Additionally, as the prices didn’t decrease as much as expected, consumers were fast to point fingers, saying that retailers were holding prices high and looking to make large profits from the situation.
This new partnership will help address the lack of maize four in the retail market – a fundamental ingredient to Kenyan households. Tuskys and Jumia will sell Soko Ugali maize flour and will enable consumers to buy from the retailers’ mobile platforms.
