Majid Al Futtaim, business partner of French supermarket chain Carrefour in Egypt and Kenya, is going to open a new Carrefour Market store in Kenya by the end of 2018.

Construction work will begin in May at the Village Market shopping complex in Nairobi, where Nakumatt vacated its 2,500m2 hypermarket last month. The new Carrefour Village store will not directly replace Nakumatt as the banner is a different format, focusing on stocking food items over a wider range of non-food, although it will have a small selection of electrical appliances.

Carrefour entered Kenya in 2016 and currently has five hypermarkets in Nairobi. The latest opened at Sarit Centre in April and covers 6,500m2. The new store is the first in Kenya under the Carrefour Market banner. It is expected to be between 1,000m2 and 4,0002 as per Carrefour Market’s average size.

Carrefour established the Carrefour Market banner in 2007 in France and expanded it internationally in 2011. Majid Al Futtaim launched its first Carrefour Market store in 2009 in Egypt, where it currently has five stores, as well as 29 Carrefour supermarkets. Carrefour Market is also present in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco and Tunisia.

Majid Al Futtaim operates 230 Carrefour stores across 15 markets. It plans to continue expanding its Carrefour operations across Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and into Russia.
