Nestlé Cameroon has opened a new production unit to manufacture and package its Nido fortified powdered milk range.

The new unit is an investment of US$5m. It will create 12 new jobs at the Douala production plant in Bonabéri, with a potential further 48 jobs in the next few years. The unit can produce more than 5,500 tonnes of Nido Forti Choco every year. Nido currently represents 9% of the Douala plant’s entire production.

Swiss-based food group Nestlé has been present in Cameroon since 1965. Local production began in 1981 with the opening of the plant in Douala which currently employs more than 450 people. In 2016, Nestlé invested US$18.4m in expanding the Douala plant which also produces Maggi stock cubes and Nescafé coffee and supplies five CEMAC countries.

Nestlé Central & West Africa, founded in 2005, is based in Ghana and operates in 22 countries. It has production plants in Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria and employs 6,700 people. In February 2018, it invested US$11.3m in a new production unit in Nigeria to produce its Milo chocolate malt beverage.
