Nakumatt Junction Mall
Carrefour takes over Nakumatt’s 5,000m² retail space in Nairobi’s upmarket Junction Mall, due to open in January 2018

Carrefour has now confirmed it is taking over the former Nakumatt supermarket in the Junction Mall, Nairobi. The Junction Mall, which opened in 2004, is a prime retail space which is highly popular with affluent Kenyan consumers. The complex, for which Carrefour will be the anchor tenant, has 24,000m² retail space and has 120 stores including Woolworths, Mr Price, and Apple and Nike stores.

Nakumatt’s store in the mall closed on October 1st 2017 after owing KSh50m ($500,000) to the landlord. At the time, Carrefour was known to be interested in taking over the Nakumatt space but until today now had not confirmed that it actually would do so.

The new hypermarket, Carrefour’s fourth store in Kenya, will be opened in January 2018. As with its Thika Road Mall opened in November, the Junction Mall hypermarket will initially operate in one section of the store while refurbishment works are completed. Eventually it will offer 5,000m² of retail space.
