The new Waterfront Karen mall has agreed an anchor tenancy with South African retailer Game. Ailing supermarket chain Nakumatt was previously tapped to fill the spot but was dropped by developers.

Supermarket chain Game is set to open its second store in Kenya, after developers of the soon-to-open Waterfront Karen mall, in Nairobi, dropped the agreed tenancy with ailing retailer Nakumatt.

Game first entered Kenya in 2015 with an outlet at Garden City Mall, in Nairobi. Game retails on behalf of Massmart Holdings, which is owned by U.S. retailer Walmart. According to Trendtype’s Retail Database Tracker, it operates 483 stores across 13 different countries in Africa, including South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Namibia or Malawi. Although Massmart is only in Kenya with Game, it operates additional banners elsewhere.

Game is not the only retailer filling in retail space left behind by Nakumatt. Just this week, French retailer Carrefour opened a new outlet in Thika Road Mall, only a few weeks after Nakumatt closed down its outlet in the shopping centre. Outside Nairobi, other retailers have also been bidding for former Nakumatt space. This week, Tuskys supermarkets opened on a former Nakumatt store in Kisii and will soon launch another outlet in Kisumu. Botswanan retailer Choppies agreed to take the tenancy at Kiambu Mall.

The Waterfront Karen is scheduled to open coming January and its first phase consists of a 31,000 square meters construction area, mainly destined to retail.
