Business owners in Ethiopia’s Oromia region are protesting a new business tax. The tax is levied on small businesses with an annual turnover of up to $4,300 in a government bid to raise revenue. So far 148,000 traders have had their income evaluated to see if they should be paying it.
Taxation is low in Ethiopia, averaging 15.2% of GDP compared to a world average of 34%. A 2016 survey showed that 54% of businesses feel that the effort of complying with tax laws is worse than the actual amount of tax.
