Melcom online has launched in Ghana earlier this week. The platform, which will allow customers to do their shopping on demand and have products delivered at their chosen location, allows for cash payment on delivery although it has both VISA and Mastercard support as well. To ensure the delivery, Melcom partnered with Skynet Express, a company that has been operating in the Ghanaian market for a few years already.
During the launching ceremony at the Achimota Mall, Melcom Communications Director Gowin Avenorgbo stated that the main reason behind Melcom’s move into e-commerce was related to the costs and time of acquisition of the physical infrastructure necessary to meet the demand of the retailer’s increasing customer base. Mr. Avenorgbo said that it had become “imperative to find a tested way” to expand the business, taking into account the existing constraints.
According to Trendtype’s retail database tracker, Melcom currently has 36 stores in Ghana, including three hypermarket, making it the leader of the sector, in terms of number of stores. This number is likely to go up with the opening of the newly rebuilt Achimota branch, later this month.
