Shoprite suffers employee fraud in Nigeria

Two workers at Shoprite’s Victoria Island, Lagos, branch have been arraigned for stealing N1.4m (US$4,500) from their employer. The two are part of a larger group that defrauded the retailer. The two men are accused of diverting money paid by customers at Point of Sale (POS) Terminals into their personal accounts. Shoprite’s experience mirrors a theme we hear reasonably often among retailers operating in Nigeria and West Africa of the risks of employee-led financial theft.
