Choppies replaces Nakumatt as anchor tenant in Kenyan mall

Choppies

Botswana retailer Choppies just signed the lease to become the anchor tenant in the new Kiambu Mall in Kenya, set to open in late August. This role had been previously assigned to Nakumatt but the Kenyan giant retailer had to pull out following a series of financial struggles that led to an expansion halt and the launch of a restructuring plan just last month.

Choppies will thus become the first big retailer to open in Kiambu as it plans to further extend its footprint in Kenya, opening three additional stores this year and five others in 2018. Each of these will cost approximately $2 million to open and fully stock. This plan also includes the refurbishment of the old Ukwala outlets which Choppies acquired in 2015.
