Guinea-Bissau: retail hits back at plastic bag ban

The government in Guinea-Bissau has failed to implement the law passed a year ago banning plastic bags. A number of awareness campaigns have already been launched but, it seems, to no avail.

Consumers have generally not complied with the new rules but retailers are the ones at the forefront of the resistance. According to several traders working in the main markets of Bissau, retailers recognize the problems associated with using plastic bags. In fact, most of them are aware of their environmental consequences. However, opinions have focused on the absence of any alternatives to the use of plastic bags, which are mainly imported from Senegal, Guinea and Gambia.

Ever since the law was passed, retailers have criticized the government, especially for not having been consulted during the legislative process. Additionally, the Informal Traders Association requested a period of transition that wasn’t granted by the government.
