The Algerian government calls for more hypermarkets

The Ministry of Commerce in Algeria is seeking to attract more hypermarkets to the country. Citing store universe data of just nine hypermarkets and 244 supermarkets in the country, ministers have highlighted a lack of organised grocery retail. One of the key issues the government has identified is the problems grocery retail operators have securing suitable land from local government.

Separately, the government is seeking to create more wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, and specifically looking to establish markets at Ain-Defla, Mascara, Sétif, Guelma, Ouargla, Djelfa, Biskra and Mila.
