Uchumi is testing a new franchising model it intends rolling out in H2 2017, under which small private supermarkets could trade under the Uchumi name. Two stores, one of which is in Nairobi’s Mwiki estate in Kasarani, are already running under the Uchumi Xpress franchise banner.

The Uchumi franchise model was first announced in 2016 and the retailer plans to partner with around 200 pricate stores. Tuskys, the other main supermarket brand targeting middle class Kenyan shoppers, has also created franchise plans. It has signed a deal with Vivo Energy Kenya which will enable it to open 75 convenience stores at Shell-branded petrol stations.
